Before you begin
Your CAPM® certification guide
CAPM is PMI’s foundational project management certification. It can be a useful starting point for students, career changers and people supporting projects who want to develop their project management knowledge.
PMI information checked 21 October 2026
Check that CAPM fits your next step
PMI currently requires:
- A secondary degree, such as a high school diploma, GED or global equivalent
- A minimum age of 18
- At least 23 hours of project management education completed before the exam
No project management work experience is required.
Should I consider PMP instead?
If you already have experience leading projects, compare your education and experience with PMI’s current PMP eligibility requirements. CAPM is not a prerequisite for PMP. Choose the credential that fits your experience and goals; CAPM does not replace PMP’s experience requirement.
Know what the exam covers
- Questions
- 150
- Exam time
- 180 minutes
- Content domains
- 4
| Domain | Weight |
|---|---|
| Project Management Fundamentals and Core Concepts | 36% |
| Predictive, Plan-Based Methodologies | 17% |
| Agile Frameworks/Methodologies | 20% |
| Business Analysis Frameworks | 27% |
Use the PMI CAPM Examination Content Outline to check the tasks within each domain. Prepare across all four domains, including the areas that feel less familiar. Review the outline for question formats and exam procedures as well as content.
Build a study rhythm you can keep
Start with hours and days you can protect each week. Use a scheduled exam date if you have one, or set a flexible review checkpoint. Your course education hours are not a promise of total preparation time; allow time for independent practice and review.
Learn one focused topic
Work through the explanation and its example. Identify the decision the concept helps you make.
Apply it with less support
Try a different situation before looking at the explanation. Notice which details change the answer.
Practice independently
Use mixed questions and timed practice. Record whether an error came from a knowledge gap, a missed detail or weak reasoning.
Review and adjust
Choose the next study priority from your results. Revisit weak areas, then test them in new situations while maintaining coverage of every domain.
LevelUP’s course includes a certification roadmap, exam orientation and a study planner to help you put these steps into practice.
How will I know I am ready?
- I have covered all four domains and revisited repeated mistakes
- I can explain my choices in new situations without prompts or hints
- I have practiced pacing through a full-length exam
- My recent results show improvement that holds across different questions
These are LevelUP preparation checks, not a PMI passing standard. Course completion and a single practice score do not guarantee an exam result. Use the evidence to decide what to strengthen next.
Move from preparation to an exam appointment
- Gather your records. Keep your academic and project management education details, including your completion documentation.
- Apply through PMI. Use your own PMI account and respond to any requests for supporting documents.
- Pay and schedule after approval. Follow PMI’s instructions for a testing-center or online-proctored appointment.
- Check the current testing rules. Confirm identification, appointment and technology requirements before exam day.
What costs should I plan for?
Budget for your preparation course and PMI’s separate exam fee. Optional PMI membership is also separate. Check current fees directly with PMI before applying; course enrollment does not purchase the certification exam.
